Tuition and coaching

VIOLIN, VIOLA, PIANO, PIPE ORGAN & COMPOSITION
Teaching is part of every artist’s day, and is a pleasure and a privilege. I’m committed to being the best possible teacher and to this end, the main focus is always on exploring your natural technique and finding the most you can achieve. No matter if you want to play Für Elise or Free Bird, or prefer Metallica to Mozart – I believe if you learn to play the instrument, then the music can play itself. And then you’ll find that you can play anything you want.

PHILOSOPHY OF TEACHING
It’s fair that some students will excel prestissimo, and others will enjoy the process of learning more andante. Lessons have to suit you, so each term we can re-assess your motivation and goals.

Like in life, we should never perform at our limit. If you enjoy performing, I’ll support your entry to Eisteddfods and coach your performances to achieve the greatest result. If prefer to sit AMEB/ ABRSM exams, you can learn the repertoire and technical exercises, and you’ll be examined on your chosen grade after you complete the music and technical requirements of the next. This method keeps the goals clear but guarantees a higher mark without stress, and minimal impingement on professional or school commitments. While the methods and philosophy of my tutelage is in some ways unique, the overarching principles fit comfortably within the frameworks of the West Australian Music Teachers’ Association and Australian String Teacher’s Association.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
I began teaching while in my teens, but since graduating from the Royal Northern College of Music (composition, conducting, piano) have taught and coached privately in England, Germany and Australia. Before beginning my PhD (composition, conducting) in 2008 I joined the faculty of compositon at UWA, lecturing to all undergraduate years, before moving to Germany in 2013. From 2014 I taught from my own studio in East Berlin, then accepted a position as a vocal coach at the TUI Entertainment’s German headquarters. Returning to Australia in 2016 I taught piano, violin and classes of IB Composition at Scotch College, then was appointed Head of Strings and Accompanist at St Hilda’s Anglican Girls’ School, where I remained until 2021, and then taught violin, viola and piano at JSR and John Wollaston ACS. Moving to the hills in 2024, now I teach violin, viola and piano, coach and rehearse for performances and examinations at my studio in Mundaring, and accompany for independent, Anglican and Catholic schools across the metropolitan area.
Since 2022 I have been an examiner for ATAR performance.
